I had a whole plan on what I was going to write about tonight, but then something happened and my whole plan shifted. Adaptability is key in this line of work!!!
The quick details (the fun stuff will be elaborated on tomorrow after our one day off which will be filled with joy an d adventures)
So today we had a shortened clinic in the village of Igunga, where we saw 280-ish patients in 5 hours. It felt slow compared to the last week but it was steady and we reached 280-ish people and THAT is what matters. The remainder of the day we took some time to enjoy a meal and some dancing in the sun with our Kenyan partners (Nurses, Clinical directors, drivers and program supports....will share all that joy tomorrow.)
For now I was to focus on such a beautifully perfect story of why we are here. If you have been following along you know that we are not simply medical camps we are also community outreach health. Well, a few days ago during clinic a gentleman came to our team and asked if someone could come check on his parents as they were elderly and socially isolated at his home due to general age concerns. In fact his mother who is 93 walks to his home daily.....DAILY with a walking stick and it takes her over an hour and a half one way. His father, struggles with some dementia at age 96 and is unable to get himself around the home, however DAILY family members lift and carry him from his bed out to the porch so he can sit in a chair and soak up the sun during the day. He can see his friends pass buy but cant get anywhere.
Two of our team nurses (Mandie and Tanya) did a home visit and felt so impacted by this story that they in turn, advocated for this family to Patti , our team lead and CNFA President, who quickly reviewed with the CNFA board, achieving approval for purchasing two wheelchairs for this couple.
Today , without Tanya and Mandie knowing the wheelchairs were picked up and the gentleman who came to ask for our help was contacted to pick them up. What a beautiful reunion that was!!!!
It was the compassion and kindness in the advocacy from Tanya and Mandie that have now impacted the lives of two seniors who are struggling to live out the remaining of their lives and all those who are involved in their care...their children and friends....just writing this story out is giving way to a few tears rising in my eyes.
I am sure the family is thankful to the advocacy, the review of the situation and the beautiful outcome, way to go CNFA!!!! As a team, we make a difference in the lives of those we serve. I am beyond proud to be on a team with such amazing nurses.
Take a peek below at some photos of the modest family home, the gent who came to us and a little peek at his sweet sweet mamma.
